# As dawn begins to break on Sunday morning, use binoculars to examine Venus low in the east. Sparkling just ½° from it is 1st-magnitude Regulus, less than 1% as bright, as shown at right.
# And if you're out before dawn at a dark site, look for the zodiacal light ("false dawn") towering up at an angle in the east.
Sunday, Sept. 20
# Jupiter is passing just 1/3° north of Iota Capricorni, magnitude 4.3, from now through Thursday.
Monday, Sept. 21
# Juno, the third asteroid discovered, is at an unusually favorable opposition. This week it shines at magnitude 7.7, near the 5th-magnitude star 27 Piscium. This is the brightest it will be until 2018. Just a few degrees away is Uranus. See our article and finder chart.
# Jupiter's Great Red Spot should cross Jupiter's central meridian (the imaginary line down the center of the planet's disk from pole to pole) around 10:31 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The "red" spot is currently very pale orange-tan. It should be visible for about an hour before and after in a good 4-inch telescope if the atmospheric seeing is sharp and steady. A light blue or green filter helps. The Red Spot transits about every 9 hours 56 minutes; for all of the Red Spot's central-meridian crossing times, good worldwide, use our Red Spot calculator or print out our list for 2009.
